Why Do We Travel?

Let’s face facts, vacation is expensive. Going on a trip takes time to plan, time to save money, and time to travel to our destination and back home as well as time spent exploring our destination. So, why do we spend so much time and money and effort for months into a trip that will only last for a short amount of time?

“Time Well Spent”

There are multiple inspirational quotes that mention “time well spent.” But what does this phrase mean? There is a whole new world out there just waiting to be seen. There are multiple ways to spend your time. Some people spend their time by laying in bed. Some people take years to get a degree. Degree or not, most people go to work almost every single day. However, there are only 24 hours in a day. If you spend your days working, watching movies, taking a nap, or traveling, there will only be 24 hours in a day. The time you spend is the only time you have. You can never get back that time. Also, we do not know how much time each of us has left. Therefore, the metaphor of time well spent will be based off your perception of how to spend your days. In my opinion, we should make time to see a new place, visit a new country, and spend good quality time with family and friends. Some people will not feel that way and that is okay. Maybe you want to set up a future for yourself instead of “wasting” money on trips. However, you should always keep in mind to feel grateful for the time that you have. Also, every person will need to scratch that adventure itch at some point to keep that motivation refreshed.

Sense of Adventure

Travelling creates a sense of adventure. Eventually, we get bored of looking at the same environment, passing those same houses, driving down that same expressway, looking at that same landmark every single time you pass it. Going on vacation scratches that “adventure itch.” Vacation also gives us a feeling of something new. Visiting a new area, visiting a new country, and doing something that you have never done before will give you confidence in yourself, as well as confidence to do something more challenging. It will also refresh your body as well as your mind and soul.

Create New Memories

As everyone knows, travelling creates new memories! You cannot erase the past, but you can create your future. Every day is a new day! If you do not like the way things are going, start over! Find that new job, start a new degree, start achieving the things on your bucket list. Your happiness is your priority! In my opinion, travelling to places that are “out of this world,” completing activities that you never dreamed you could do, and seeing the world’s most natural wonders are worth every single penny. These experiences will change your life mentally, because you took the time out of your busy lives to make life worth it.

One of my favorite memories was climbing a mountain at the Adirondacks. I have never climbed a mountain before, and it was supposed to be an “easy-beginner” mountain upon the list of the 46-ers. For those of you who do not know much about the Adirondacks (like me), the 46-ers is a club of hikers who have climbed all of the original 46 High Peaks around the Adirondacks. This hike was not an easy hike. My best friend’s family has been hiking for years, and this mountain was a challenge to them as well. The hike was 4.4 miles round-trip. It was very muddy, wet, swampy, and very steep. All I kept saying to myself was “God, please give me the strength to finish this climb.” I completed this climb after so much sweat and tears and I almost gave up three different times. I will never forget this experience, and because of this, I have more confidence within myself. I know that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to, literally and metaphorically. Because once you climb that “mountain,” it will be worth it to see the view.
